The Dental Crown Procedure

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

One procedure, which is one of the more popular techniques for both dentists and patients, is the dental crown procedure. The dental crown procedure involves fitting the patient with custom made dental crowns which are essentially caps for the teeth which cover everything up to the gum line.

The dental crown procedure generally involves two sittings with the dentist apart from the consultation session where you finalise on crowns. In the first sitting the dentist prepares the tooth to receive the crown. For this the dentist reduces the tooth by the same thickness of the dental crown which is about 2 millimetres. At this time the dentist also takes care of any decay that may be present on the tooth. The tooth is also shaped so that the crown fits well.

The next step in the dental crown procedure is to make an impression of your tooth so that the crown can be made to fit exactly. The next step is to attach the dental crown. However the patient cant go home with a shaved tooth and the dental crown procedure involves the dentist fitting you with a temporary crown of plastic or metal till you come back for the final fitting.

In the second session the dentist fits a specially prepared dental crown which is the exact colour of the patient’s natural teeth. The dentist first numbs your tooth and will then test that the crown fits well onto the tooth and that you’re happy with the shape and colour. The final step of the dental crown procedure is fitting the crown on with dental cement.
